The Howard S. Katz Excellence in Teaching Award, initiated in March 2001, will be presented at Spring Convocation to a member of the Faculty of Dentistry for superior teaching at the undergraduate level.
The Selection Committee comprises the Dean, the Associate Dean (Academic), the President of the Dental Students' Society, and two academic staff members (one clinical and one preclinical) who are selected by Faculty Council.
The award will consist of a scroll and a cheque for $1,000, and the recipient's name will be inscribed on a plaque to be mounted in the Faculty Council Room.
Nominations are sought from staff and recent graduates (5 years) and must be received prior to the first Friday in March of a given year. Each nomination will be initiated by two letters of support; one from the nominator and one from a seconder. Nominators should provide a brief description of the general procedures they used in the selection of the candidate. Nominees must be willing to attend Convocation to accept the award if selected.
The nominator should solicit evidence of outstanding teaching through letters from former faculty and/or from former students who have gone on to successful careers, and also through letters of support from the candidate's division or teaching hospital. Please note that letters from current students are discouraged.
The following criteria will contribute to the evaluation: excellent student evaluations, evidence of pedagogical innovation, and recognition of leadership in dental education.
Nominations should be mailed to: The Office of the Dean, 3640 University Street, Room M/21, Montreal, QC, H3A 2B2.
