Department of Art History & Communication Studies (PhD)

I'm a comms Ph.D. student with a background in critical criminology, a DTL research assistant, and I also moonlight as a feminist social justice blogger on Tumblr. My research investigates the ways in which social constructions of crime and deviance inform, and are informed by, policy development like criminal justice and school anti-rape programs.

While still in the proposal stage, my dissertation will likely investigate how and why North American young women (16-25) use Tumblr for feminist cyber-activism. Specifically, I'd like to understand how/why some young women use Tumblr to navigate, challenge, and reframe their mainstream, white, cis-heteronormative, neo-liberal social constructions as "at risk", particularly from minority perspectives (e.g., race, gender, sexual orientation).
