The official name will be Centre for Research on Religion / Centre de Recherche sur la Religion (CREOR).

Governance & Management

The overall management of the Research Centre is the responsibility of the Board.


The Centre is governed by a Governing Board, which consists of the Dean of the lead faculty or delegate, who acts as Chair; the Director; the Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations) or delegate; a graduate student member; and the deans of the participating faculties or delegates, preferably representing various research areas on a rotating basis.

The individual members, the units and the teams, which are represented by the Centre, will report annually to the Governing Board of the Centre. All members of the Governing Board have one vote each; decisions must be taken by a plurality of votes cast in person.

The Chair will convene the Board at least once annually.

Appointment of Director

The Board recommends the appointment of the Director (and, if required, the Associate Director). If it deems necessary, the Board may open a search for a Director. The appointments of the Director (and Associate Director) will normally be for three (3) years, with the opportunity of renewal once only. The nominations for Director will be made to the Board by a sub-committee consisting of the Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations) or delegate as Chair, two active members of the Research Centre and one member of the Board. The position of Director does not automatically offer teaching release. Any decision on teaching release is the prerogative of the head of the home unit of the Director.

Director's Duties

The Director is responsible for managing the daily business of the Centre, its various activities, its budget, and its annual report. In the event of an extended absence of the Director, the Associate Director will be in charge of managing the Centre.

Annual Report

The Director will prepare the Annual Report of the Centre, which will include all financial details of the operation, and will present this Annual Report to the Board for approval. The Annual Report will then be submitted according the appropriate University policy.


There will normally be FIVE classes of membership in the Centre:

  • Full Member: an established researcher, with  a major research affiliation with the centre
  • Associate Member: an established researcher, with  a secondary affiliation with the centre
  • Visiting Member: a visiting scholar/researcher, appointed to the research centre for a limited term
  • Research Associate Member: an emerging Scholar/Researcher, appointed to the research centre for a limited term
  • Graduate Student Member

Nominations for new Full Members of the Centre must include full curricula vitae and must be submitted to the board for approval. Terms of membership are renewable, and each term will be up to six years for Full Members, up to two years for Student Members and Research Associate Members and up to one year for Visiting Members.

Annual General Meeting

There will be a General Meeting of all Members of the Centre once a year to discuss the Annual Report. Only Full Members will be permitted to vote on motions presented.

Extraordinary Meeting of Board

An Extraordinary Meeting of the Board can be convened if the Chair of the Board has been informed, in writing, of such a request and the letter has been signed by at least 2/3 of the Full Members of the Centre.

Research Agreements, Contracts, and Grants

The Centre does not have the right to sign and enter into research agreements, grants, or contracts that require McGill institutional approval from authorized University signing officers. Similarly, gifts to the Centre must be managed through the appropriate University channels.

Dissolution of Research Centre

If the Centre no longer satisfies the basic requirements laid down by the University, e.g., insufficient membership, lack of demonstrable research activity, failure to file Annual Reports, no longer a University priority, etc., the Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations) can recommend that the Centre be closed.
