Cancellation of Fall 2021 exchanges and independent study abroad

The Canadian government is currently maintaining a Global Level 3 travel advisory, indicating that all non-essential travel outside of Canada should be avoided until further notice. For this reason, McGill has made the difficult decision to cancel all outbound international exchanges and independent study abroad for the Fall 2021 semester. Relatedly, students will not be able to take online courses with the host university they were set to attend in Fall 2021.

Important points to note regarding the cancellation of Fall 2021 exchanges (including full year):

  • The $150 application fee for the Fall 2021 exchange application will be refunded ** and your application will be automatically cancelled. Please do not submit a cancellation form.
  • Deferrals will not be possible for the Winter 2022 semester. Should you want to take part in an exchange in Winter 2022, we recommend that you first consult with your faculty advisor to discuss your options and eligibility.
  • Should you wish to go on exchange in Winter 2022, it will be necessary to reapply. Please check the McGill Abroad website for updates in the upcoming weeks.

If you have any questions, please contact mcgillabroad [at] and CC your faculty. Please also include your student ID number so that the McGill Abroad team can best respond to and keep track of your inquiry.

** The application fee refund will be processed once the Winter 2022 application review is completed and provided you do not apply for a Winter 2022 exchange.
