Setting up your McGill credentials

McGill ID and PIN

You need your McGill ID (9-digit number) and McGill PIN to access Minerva.

You should have received the “Welcome to McGill on behalf of IT Services!” email containing your McGill ID, under the “Your McGill ID and PIN” section. Alternatively, you can also find your McGill ID in Athena under “My Athena Profile” > “Credentials”.

Once you have your McGill ID, and if this is your first time logging in, follow the steps below to set your McGill PIN:

  1. Go to Minerva at mcgill.ca/minerva.
  2. Enter your 9-digit McGill ID.
  3. Enter your 6-character PIN, which is equal to your date of birth in the format YYMMDD. For example, if you were born on July 25, 1989 you would enter 890725.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions that will prompt you to reset your PIN and select a security question to answer, such as "What is your pet's name?".

 

NOTE: If you previously studied, have worked or are currently working at McGill and already know your Minerva PIN, you can continue to use it to log in.

Should you ever forget the PIN you have chosen, enter only your McGill ID and click “Forgot PIN?”. By answering your security question, you will be allowed to reset your PIN.

 

McGill Username and Password

You need your McGill Username (usually in the form of firstname.lastname [at] mail.mcgill.ca) and McGill Password to access most IT services, including Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus applications (if registered for courses), One Drive, Minerva, McGill Email, Wireless Network and Virtual Private Network (VPN). For more details and links to these services, visit the IT Services website.

You should have received the “Welcome to McGill on behalf of IT Services!” email containing your McGill Username and temporary password, under the “Your McGill Username and Password” section.

Once you have your McGill Username and temporary password, follow the steps below to set your Password:

  1. Go to the Office 365 portal at https://portal.office.com/
  2. Enter your McGill Username (McGill Email address).
  3. Enter the token provided in the IT Services email, followed by your date of birth in the format YYYYMMDD. Do not add spaces.

NOTE: The date of birth format for your temporary McGill Password is different from that of your McGill PIN as all four digits of the year must be included in your temporary password. For example, if you were born on July 25, 1989, you would enter 19890725.

Alternatively, you can find your McGill Username and set your McGill Password in Minerva under “Personal Menu” > “Password for McGill Username”.

NOTE: If you previously studied, have worked or are currently working at McGill and already know your McGill Password, you can continue to use it to log in.

 

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Once your McGill Password is set, you will be required to set up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) if you want to access Microsoft Office 365 application (e.g. McGill Email) off-campus. 2FA is a secondary security feature that requires users to verify their identity by acknowledging a notification or entering a code sent to a mobile device, such as a smart phone.
