Student Review

I have always wanted to reach a greater level of fluency in French, but never seemed to find the time. Like many people, I lost my job and suddenly found myself with a lot of free time at home, and the Intensive French Language and Culture program gave me something to look forward to each day. I loved that it was five days a week, with work in class and after class, with optional (and very valuable!) conversation partners twice a week. The immersive format helped me to improve my listening comprehension, and oral and written French. My teachers were very accessible, and I enjoyed working with my classmates - even though we weren't able to meet in person. The program left me feeling inspired and with greater confidence, and I am continuing to explore French culture by watching films, reading magazines, and listening to podcasts. I am excited for eventual travel where I will certainly use what I have learned in French-speaking cities, and also to use the language skills I have acquired in my career as an actor and singer. Distance learning was also a great way to keep my brain active during times of unemployment, and to connect with others from around the world.

Working as a nurse in Mexico, I’d been looking for the next steps in my career and wanted to move to Quebec, where there was lots of opportunity for healthcare professionals. To prepare, I needed to find a French program that I could be confident would help me learn quickly and effectively.

McGill’s French Language and Culture program had everything I was looking for, on top of being from a world-renowned university. What I liked most was how experienced the instructors were and their teaching methods, which included discussions and written assignments so I could improve both my speaking and writing.

Thanks to this program, I can now speak to family members and friends in French, and I’m preparing to start university in Montreal in gerontology in French!
