Essential Workplace Skills Training

Essential skills – including foundational skills, such as digital literacy; social and emotional skills; and employment readiness skills – are critical competencies that every professional needs to meet current and future workforce requirements across all industries. The Essential Skills for Learning and Working impact paper by the Conference Board of Canada states that “These key literacies are a starting point for learning other technical skills; without these key literacies, opportunities in formal education, experiential learning opportunities, and professional growth are often out of reach.”

The research is mounting! The 2022 LinkedIn Reinvention of Company Culture report found that 59% of employees believe professional development is the number one way to build human-focused company culture. On the other hand, the consequences of neglecting professional development are significant. According to the New Hiring Outlook report by The Execu|Search Group, 86% of professionals said that they would change jobs if a new company offered them more opportunities for professional development.

So why should organizations invest in their employees’ upskilling, including formal training in essential skills? Here are a few reasons:

  • Employees skilled in foundational competencies enable organizations to remain competitive
  • Providing professional development opportunities is vital to employee attraction and retention
  • While newly hired employees often meet the technical skills, they are often lacking in key areas, such as communications and digital literacy
  • Essential skills training empowers professionals to learn technical skills
  • Foundational skills allow professionals to be more agile and adapt to workplace changes
