FAQs

What happens if you did not get lessons during the past two weeks (last week Winter term, first week Spring Term)?

You will receive a credit for these lessons if you had no instruction during the mandated closure period. We have been collecting data from all instructors concerning who did or did not receive lessons. This credit will appear on the student’s Student Account on Minerva and can be applied to future lessons/classes. At this time it will not be possible to actively reimburse you (particularly if you paid through the office), but should this be an issue, please let us know.

Are you registered for Spring Term?

We are not accepting any more new students for the Spring Term, so you are our priority. Lessons only will be offered remotely; therefore, you must have the necessary equipment to participate. All late fees have been waived. If you have been waiting to decide if you should register, now is the time to do it. Registration deadline is extended until Saturday March 28th. Payment must be online either by credit card or by online banking as per usual. Please remember to use the unique McGill ID of the student, this is included in most e-mail correspondence you have received from the Conservatory. There still will be 10 lessons for this session (9 more if you had a lesson already this week). If you are registered but not able to continue lessons remotely, the course fees will be credited in full to the Student Account on Minerva. At this time it will not be possible to actively reimburse you (particularly if you paid through the office), but should this be an issue, please let us know.

What will happen to group lessons for Suzuki Piano and Violin?

There will be no group classes, and no end-of-year concerts for Suzuki Piano and Violin students. All Suzuki registrations for the Spring Term will be transferred to Traditional lessons (based on lesson length); therefore, you will not be charged the Suzuki rate (see Course Fees).

What is the status of the following group courses: Little Musicians (Downtown and Macdonald), Parents’ class – Little Musicians, Orff, Ukulele, Jazz Combos, Jazz Improvisation and String Ensemble ?

Unfortunately, these courses must be cancelled for the Spring and Summer Terms. Students will receive a credit in their Student Account on Minerva for these cancelled classes since March 14, 2020. We hope to welcome you back for the Fall Term. At this time, it will not be possible to actively reimburse you (particularly if you paid through the office), but should this be an issue, please let us know.

What is the status of the Theory and Ear Training courses?

Investigation of possible remote classes is taking place. Students will receive information concerning this possibility shortly from the Theory and Ear Training Area Chair.

What is the status of the Children's and Youth Choirs?

There will be no in-person Children's and Youth Choir rehearsals for the Spring Term. However, stay tuned to communications from Penni and Félix (choirs.conservatory [at] mcgill.ca) regarding special remote choir sessions. We trust that all choristers will be able to participate in these exciting initiatives that are in planning stages.

Are you registered for a Conservatory instrumental examination in June?

We currently are assessing the viability of doing our examinations remotely; more information will come as details emerge. We hope to provide an opportunity to recognize our students’ work throughout the year and encourage them to continue!
