Different types of brain damage caused by a concussion may lead to similar symptoms in children, according to research led by McGill University. A new way of studying concussions could help develop future treatments.

While most children fully recover after a concussion, some will have lasting symptoms. The findings published in eLife help explain the complex relationships that exist between symptoms and the damage caused by the injury.

Two in three hospitalized seniors are prescribed drugs that should be avoided by older adults, increasing the risk of injury and adverse drug reactions. Improving hospital prescribing practices can reduce the frequency of inappropriate medications and resulting harm, according to a new study led by McGill University researchers.

During a ceremony held August 29, 2016 at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine, the School of Physical & Occupational Therapy (SPOT), in partnership with CBI-Concordia Physio Sport NDG, was officially recognized as a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence. Joining the University of British Columbia as one of only two such sites accredited by FIFA in Canada, the primary focus of the Centre will be to educate the soccer community about different aspects of athletic performance from training principles, to nutrition and sport specific skills.

Microglia

In many pathologies of the nervous system, there is a common event - cells called microglia are activated from surveillant watchmen into fighters.  Microglia are the immune cells of the nervous system, ingesting and destroying pathogens and damaged nerve cells. Until now little was known about the molecular mechanisms of microglia activation despite this being a critical process in the body.
