Corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosures can enhance a company’s public image and contribute to increased sales. However, these benefits may come at a cost. In a study analyzing CSR disclosures from companies in China, where such reporting is mandatory, Associate Professor of Quantitative Marketing and Analytics Vivek Astvansh found that while these disclosures attract customers, they may also discourage new suppliers.

A working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research by Associate Professor of Finance Ruslan Goyenko finds that returns associated with trade timing are substantial—they can impact returns as much as stock selection itself.
Cynthia Price Verreault (BCom’82) has been appointed McGill’s first Deputy Chancellor. In this new role, she will support the Chancellor, President, and Board of Governors. Throughout her two-year term, Price Verreault will offer counsel and play a key role in representing the University at events and high-level meetings.“We are delighted that someone with as deep a knowledge of the institution as Ms. Price Verreault has will be working alongside our new Chancellor, Pierre Boivin,” says Maryse Bertrand, Chair of the McGill Board of Governors.
In 2023, McGill launched 28 research-based startup companies—all headquartered in Quebec. This is the highest number among universities in North America, according to AUTM, a Washington, DC-based non-profit focused on technology transfer. McGill’s research-based startups cover a wide range of academic expertise but are particularly concentrated in medical technologies and the life sciences. At McGill Desautels, the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship (which awards the Dobson Cup), acts as a hub of entrepreneurial activity.
Job seekers put their resumes out there to be judged by potential employers, but the evaluation goes both ways, says Lisa Cohen, Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at McGill Desautels. “Candidates talk to other candidates,” Cohen tells The Globe and Mail.

AI-powered apps offering medical diagnoses at the click of a button are often limited by biased data and a lack of regulation, leading to inaccurate and unsafe health advice, a new study found.

On November 5th, Quebec's Fonds de Recherche announced the composition of its three scientific advisory committees; one for each major research sector. Each committee is comprised of 10-15 members active in research, appointed by the FRQ, the majority of whom come from public research or higher education institutions, with at least one member from a college and one student representative. Committee members are appointed for a non-renewable term of one to three years.

The Faculty of Law is delighted to share that Professor Rosalie Jukier was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal. She was presented with the award by the Hon. Marc Gold, PC, Government Representative in the Senate, at a ceremony held on 27 October.
