Congratulations to Dr. Alan Evans, Scientific Director of HBHL, for receiving the Killam Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts. The Killam Prizes are awarded yearly to Canadian scholars who have made a significant impact in their respective fields—Dr. Evans received his award for his work furthering the understanding of the human brain.

Building on HBHL's existing partnership with Mitacs, the new HBHL/NeuroSphere Top-Up for the Mitacs Accelerate Program supports graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with an interest in bridging neuroscience and industry. Eligible graduate students participating in the Mitacs Accelerate program may have a chance to receive up to $5,000 in additional funding, while postdocs can receive up to $10,000.

NeuroSphere, McGill’s neuroscience innovation accelerator, is pleased to announce the ten grant recipients from its first Ignite competition, which launched in Fall 2019. As the first of two phases in the HBHL Neuro-Commercialization Grants program, the objective of the Ignite Grants program is to support small-scale validation and proof-of-principle efforts in the development of a neuroscience-related technology.

In March, NeuroSphere welcomed representatives of acceleration hubs and experts from the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Montreal for a one-day event focusing on innovation and entrepreneurship for researchers. Speakers included Yannick Roy (NeuroTechX), Christian Dansereau (Perceive AI), Dylan Wade Roskams-Edris (The Neuro), Margaret Magdesian (Ananda Devices, pictured), and more. Attendees were able to engage in networking sessions throughout the day.

The Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) and the McGill Genome Centre today announced they will partner to sequence the viral genomes of Quebec patients with COVID-19 disease. The collaboration, termed “Coronavirus Sequencing in Quebec,” (CoVSeQ) is led by Profs Sandrine Moreira, Hugues Charest and Michel Roger at the Laboratoire de santé publique du Québec (LSPQ) of the INSPQ. The viral samples are taken from a Quebec viral biobank, termed the CoVBanQ, which is hosted in LSPQ.

McGill faculty with relevant expertise are encouraged to join the CanCOVID initiative, an expert community of Canadian COVID-19 researchers, clinical collaborators, and healthcare stakeholders.

Mandated by the Office of the Chief Science Advisor of Canada, CanCOVID seeks to connect national research efforts in order to support collaboration, coordination, and communication between those working on projects related to COVID-19. The goal is to optimize our collective response to this public health crisis.

On March 20, 2020, the Government of Quebec announced an immediate shutdown of constructions sites due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On April 7, it was announced that the date to resume construction activities is May 4, 2020.
