The work is all tied to a recording diploma and hopefully — subject to government approval — the first full-scale, four-year recording degree in Canada."

Paul Johnston completed a BMus in jazz and MMus in sound recording at the Schulich School of Music.

In today’s music industry, many artists find that they have to diversify their sources of income in order to make a living – some may teach, repair instruments or work in music media. To reflect this, many post-secondary music schools are diversifying their curriculums to offer classes that teach skills from these areas – such as the courses that make up the new Music Entrepreneurship minor at the Schulich School of Music.

The Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce the prestigious jury for the inaugural edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. The new national competition for Canadian composers under the age of 35 is the gift of the late Dr. Graham Sommer, an alumnus of McGill’s Faculty of Medicine and an accomplished pianist and devoted music lover. Five composers will be chosen to create new works for piano quintet, earning prizes ranging from $5,000-$15,000 as well as a concert premiere at the Schulich School of Music on September 29, 2018.

The late Dr. Graham Sommer, an alumnus of McGill’s Faculty of Medicine as well as an accomplished pianist and ardent music lover, made a gift to create a biennial competition for young Canadian composers, with a focus on chamber music.

Professor Brenda Ravenscroft is the new Dean of the Schulich School of Music. Formerly Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s University, and Professor of Music Theory and Analysis, Prof. Ravenscroft began her mandate at Schulich in July of 2017. Prof. Ravenscroft taught Music Theory at McGill’s Faculty of Music from 1991 to 1993, and has maintained close ties with McGill colleagues through research and teaching interests.

Earlier this year, McGill percussion faculty member Shawn Mativetsky released Rivers, a traditional Indian classical solo tabla album – making him the first Quebec-based artist to do so. Featuring George Koller on dilruba, the disc features traditional repertoire from North India passed onto Mativetsky by his tabla teacher (or Guru).

The display case includes the names of the winners of the annual Golden Violin Competition – one of the most significant music prizes in Canada, which comes with a $25,000 cash award.“
