Congratulations are in order for Claire de Sévigné (B.Mus 2009), who will appear in the Canadian Opera Company's production of Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio as character Blonde. The coloratura soprano was profiled last week in the Globe and Mail, where she outlines the demands of singing such a challenging role.

An exciting new exhibit can be explored through the Marvin Duchow Library at McGill University – "Women, Work and Song in Nineteeth-Century France."
The exhibit explores the evolving role of women in the popular song industry of the era, and includes many pieces from the 19th-century French sheet music collection of the Library.
In a recent CBC Music feature article, Opera McGill alumni Lara Ciekiewicz (M.Mus 2008) discussed five pieces that influenced her, including pieces by Dvorák, Stephen Fearing and more.
Those looking to hear Ciekiewicz live will soon have a chance, as she will make her debut performance as Tatyana in Calgary Opera's production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, which begins February 3.
Dr. Huntington (Skip) Sheldon (1930-2018) was an iconic figure in the history of the Schulich School of Music and McGill University as a whole. In addition to a long teaching legacy in the Faculty of Medicine, he made significant contributions to the university as a philanthropist. As a result of Dr. Sheldon's generous donations, the Redpath organ was constructed and installed, and the project to build the Elizabeth Wirth Music Building was launched.
In addition, Dr. Sheldon served on the Music Facutly's advisory board for many years.

What inspired the title of your concert, “Original and Happy Freaks”?
As part of the 6th annual Virée Classique by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) on August 12, 2017, Schulich School of Music bassoon faculty members Stéphane Lévesque and Martin Mangrum took part in the world premiere of Simon Leclerc's 'Concerto Grosso for Five Bassoons, Contrabassoon, Strings and Timpani', along with OSM bassoon colleagues and guest bassoonist Carlo Colombo of the Lyon Opera Orchestra.
The Schulich School of Music is delighted to announce that violinist Violaine Melançon will be joining the string faculty as Associate Professor, beginning August 1st, 2018.
Currently, Dr. Lisa Lorenzino, Professor of Music Education, is in southern Chile with seven current and former Schulich School of Music Students as part of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas Global Leaders Program. After three days of seminars and meetings, the students have moved to a variety of locations throughout southern Chile to keep students active in free after-school music programs designed to empower youth. They will also be active as performers in the various communities.
Timothy Ledger, a current doctoral student who won the 2017-18 Classical Concerto Competition back in November 2017, is set to perform with the McGill Symphony Orchestra under the baton of guest conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni.
