The Schulich School of Music Teaching Awards are a public recognition of the excellence, commitment and innovation of our faculty, part-time instructors, and graduate teaching assistants. They serve to acknowledge the importance of these qualities in the academic experience of students at McGill. Four awards will be presented at the Schulich School of Music Spring Convocation, taking place at 3:00 p.m on Wednesday, May 31st on the McGill Lower Campus.

After playing 350 concerts, recording two albums, and appearing at more than ten international music festivals, contemporary percussion ensemble Sixtrum broke new ground by paying homage to composer (and Director of the Schulich School of Music's Digital Composition Studios) composer Philippe Leroux in their newest release, De la percussion (Soupir éditions, S232).

McGill will present Montreal-born conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin with an honorary degree. The University’s highest honour will be presented to Maestro Nézet-Séguin on May 14, at 3 p.m., at the Maison symphonique de Montréal, 1600 rue Saint-Urbain.
Despite being the most-performed operatic composer in the world, there’s a surprising lack of studies written on the style of Giuseppe Verdi’s works — a problem that Prof. Steven Huebner is addressing head-on. Recently, Huebner put out the first book in any language that offers an in-depth analysis of the composer’s musical style in the context of his 23 Italian operas, from Aida to Ernani.
Professor Julie Cumming, Associate Professor of Music History and Musicology, Interim Dean of the Schulich School of Music, has received the Graduate Faculty Teaching Award (Doctoral-level) 2016-2017 from the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS). The association is comprised of Deans and Associate Deans of graduate studies from universities on the east coast of the US north of Washington DC, within Canada, from universities in Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes.
Two Schulich School of Music voice students were winners at the Concours de Musique du Choeur de la Montagne, which took place on April 8, 2017. Baritone William Reed Copeland, BMus'17/MMus'19 received first prize, and soprano Elizabeth Mary Jane Egan BMus'18 received second prize. Both were accompanied by Schulich School of Music Rehearsal coach, pianist Louise Pelletier.

Following her debut with the Canadian Opera Company as Micaela in Carmen in 1964, Joan Patenaude-Yarnell went on to perform many of the lyric-coloratura soprano roles throughout North America (New York City Opera and San Francisco Opera, among others) and with many leading conductors of our time (Charles Mackerras, Seiji Ozawa, Julius Rudel). Her roles have included Violetta in La Traviata, Alice Ford in Falstaff, Gilda in Rigoletto, Nedda in I Pagliacci, the title role in Suor Angelica, Mimì in La Bohème, Juliette in Roméo et Juliette, Elle in La Voix Humaine, and Héro in

(Revue du nouvel album de Joe Sullivan, par Serge Truffaut, Le Devoir)
Il est tenace, Joe Sullivan, très tenace. Trompettiste, compositeur, arrangeur et professeur à McGill, il tient à bout de bras comme de pieds — faut bien battre la mesure ! — un grand orchestre, alias big band depuis plus ou moins 20 ans. En Amérique du Nord, cela est rare, extrêmement rare. Depuis peu, Sullivan nous propose un nouvel album intitulé Unfamiliar Surroundings et publié par Perry Lake Records.
Professor Dominique Labelle was honoured at the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (PBO) and Chorale's annual Winter Gala, held on March 10, 2017. At the Gala, Labelle premiered a newly commissioned piece which was written for her by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw.
Professor David Dolan, a 2016-2017 Catherine Thornhill-Steele Visiting Artist, will lead workshops for Schulich School of Music students and will also give a public lecture, sponsored jointly by the Department of Research and CIRMMT.

While ensembles at Schulich frequently put on class concerts throughout the school year, it’s much less common for them to collaborate with another of the school’s groups – let alone two. On Thursday, April 6, the McGill Baroque Orchestra, Cappella Antica and the Schulich Singers will come together to perform Handel’s legendary oratorio Israel in Egypt under the joint leadership of directors Valerie Kinslow, Jean-Sébastien Vallée and Hank Knox.
Schulich composition professor Denys Bouliane was the featured artist on March 20th in a Radio-France program devoted to his work. The conversation with animator Bruno Letort can be heard in its entirety and features large excerpts of his seminal works. For Bouliane, teaching composition is like the act of composing itself: you can have manifold interests and an open mind, but ultimately you cannot offer more than who you are.
