What led you to this particular topic?
Percussionist David Therrien Brongo (current DMus) wins at the Prix d’Europe 2021.
The 109th edition of the prestigious Concours Prix d’Europe took place June 6 – 11, 2021 at the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur in Montreal, bringing together top musical talent. The jury was comprised of renowned artists soprano Marie-Danielle Parent (Prix d’Europe 1980), cellist Carole Sirois, musicologist and oboist Michel Duchesneau, pianist Michel Franck (Prix d’Europe 1977), and orchestral and choral conductor Louis Lavigueur, C.Q..
Congratulations to Max Henry, winner of Schulich's 2020-2021 Teaching Award in the Teaching Assistant/Graduate Instructor Category.
As Teaching Assistant for MUAR 392 (Popular Music after 1945), Max showed an eagerness to support the instructor and students in whatever way. he could. Whether it be by assisting in the “live” classroom by monitoring the chat, responding directly to students, reading their questions/comments out loud, or participating in classroom dialogue, it was clear that he was there to help.
Congratulations to Jennifer Messelink, winner of Schulich's 2020-2021 Teaching Award in the MUAR Teaching Assistant/Graduate Instructor Category.
Throughout the past year teaching MUAR 392 (Popular Music after 1945) — her third time leading the course — Jennifer has proven to be an engaging and knowledgeable instructor with a commitment to and command of the material. Though students are immersed in popular culture on a daily basis, she strives to help them make sense of the vast amount of popular music accessible at their fingertips.
Congratulations to Donny Kennedy, winner of Schulich's 2020-2021 Teaching Award in the part-time category.
A dedicated educator in the Jazz Area since 2004, saxophonist Donny has been the small ensemble coordinator since he started, organizing 20-25 combos annually, as well as teaching Jazz Arranging. Students remark on his leadership, experience, and understanding in fulfilling his responsibilities for a host of undergraduate and graduate courses as well as for the design and development of the curriculum for music education or performance majors.

The 2021 Juno Award winners have been announced, and Schulich faculty, students, and alumni can be found on the list of nominees and winners. From Vocal Jazz Album of the year to various Classical Albums of the Year, the Schulich community has appeared in a number of different award categories.

As part of the Bicentennial Celebrations, staff and faculty members were asked to nominate the Unsung Heroes in their department — the less-recognized faculty and staff who have shaped the community and made a lasting impact.
The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir is one of Canada’s oldest, largest, and best-known choral ensembles. Founded in 1894 by Augustus Vogt, the Choir presented its first concert in Massey Hall, as part of the hall’s inaugural season, on January 15, 1895.
MusicFest Canada began in 1972 with a handful of Canadian musicians who created the country’s first jazz band festival. Now, in its 49th year, this small group has grown to embrace 4 Festival Divisions, the original Canadian Stage Band Festival Jazz Division, the Choral/Vocal Jazz Division(1981) the Concert Band Division (1986) and the Orchestra/String Division (2008). MusicFest Canada — “The Nationals” — brings thousands of students and educators from across the country together, over a one-week period, to celebrate excellence in musical performance.
On Sunday, May 16, three finalists filled Pollack Hall with songs and arias spanning three centuries of music. Soprano Jacqueline Woodley with pianist with Jennifer Szeto and lutenist Sylvain Bergeron, tenor Wesley Harrison with pianist Esther Gonthier and soprano Emily Richter with pianist Rebecca Klassen-Wiebe lit up the stage with their talent and skill.
We are pleased to announce that the three finalists chosen to compete for the 2020-2021 Golden Violin Award are violinists Russell Iceberg, Alicia Choi, and Astrid Nakamura. These string players were selected from a stellar semi-final round held on Saturday May 15, 2021 at Pollack Hall.
