Professor Reuven Brenner of the Desautels Faculty of Management was in Manhattan, NY on February 21 to mark the inauguration of American Affairs, a quarterly journal of public policy and political thought for which he is a contributing writer and serves on the Advisory Board. The launch was hosted at the Harvard Club with guests such as Peter Thiel, former CEO and Co-Founder of PayPal.

The Semi-finals of the McGill Dobson Cup 2017 powered by National Bank are over, and of the 121 teams that competed, 40 of them are still standing. After four days of pitches, the event’s judges have chosen 10 finalists from each of four categories (Health Sciences, Social Enterprise, Small & Medium Enterprise and Innovation Driven Enterprise) to move on to the last phase of the competition.

The McGill context can be a make-or-break thing when it comes to the University’s ability to take disciplinary action in the case of breach of the Code of Student Conduct at an event that is only peripherally McGill-related. In the latest McGill Tribune, Dean of Students Christopher Buddle points out that events held off-campus by faculty student societies (which are separate legal entities) may not be McGill jurisdiction.

Look for suggestions based on your buying habits to come over online chat or email. In a recent interview for La Presse, BonLook CEO and Desautels alumna Sophie Boulanger (BCom'03) discusses how BonLook is shaking up the industry, the value of designing and producing product rather than being a multi-brand retailer, and using social-media influencers as an integral part of her marketing strategy. The company is also opening physical shops, which Boulanger calls “service points,” where a customer can try frames on before putting their money down.

Team captain and Desautels BCom senior Keelan Marks led a remarkable McGill swim team to a second-place overall finish at this past weekend’s RSEQ championships, with 13 medals. Highlights included a sweep of the butterfly events by Samuel Wang and Kate Wist. Wang’s medal count was two golds, one silver and one bronze, while Wist claimed three golds and a personal best in the 400 free.

In a recent Huffington Post blog post, Unifor National President Jerry Dias calls out those who criticize Ottawa’s $372.5 million loan to Bombardier, saying that calling for the company to be allowed to crash and burn ignores the fact that it’s one of Canada’s biggest employers; a major player in research and innovation; and a big-ticket contributor to Canada’s GDP, hitting $12.4 billion in 2015 — not to mention the $1.6 billion that Bombardier contributed to Canada through taxes in 2015.

Desautels alumna appointed first North American director of RATP Dev
Paris-based RATP Dev is a transit operator that runs services everywhere from Algeria to the US. In 2015, it did over 1.1 billion Euros of business. As of January 1st, RATP Dev has its first North American board member, Montreal native and Desautels alumna Christiane Bergevin.

It’s difficult to get a handle on how many illegal immigrants there are in the US, but the estimated number is around 12 million, with just over half being from Mexico. Yes, there is a criminal element hidden in these numbers, but it is safe to say that the majority are working and may even have families. Rounding them up and shipping them home would be a major undertaking, and could cause friction with Mexico.
