Catching cognition in the act – new ways to track internal cognitive and experiential states across species

Abstract: Neuronal activity operates in an incredibly dynamic feedback loop between environment, internal computation and behaviour. Most of our neurobehavioural repertoire does not arise as a fixed response to external cues, but as ongoing internal computations modulated by external context. How can we trace the mechanics of such internal computations across species?
