The Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism is pleased to announce the addition of a new opportunity to the International Judicial Clerkship Program.

Established in 2019 by the Honourable Morris J. Fish, former justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, the Hon. Morris J. Fish Clerkship Award will enable one current McGill BCL/JD student, or recent graduate, each year to partially fund their clerkship at the Supreme Court of Israel. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Wainwright Fellowships are intended to to promote research in civil law at the Faculty of Law of McGill University. In addition to the classical civil law concepts such as contractual or extra-contractual obligations, the civil law is understood here in a broad sense and includes, in particular, commercial law, the labour law, maritime law, private judicial law, private international law and the law of the sea, comparative law, so long as the civil law is a substantial element of it.

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Daniel Jutras, OC, Ad. E., has been appointed an officer of the Order of Canada. Professor Jutras was honoured “for his contributions to the development of pluralist law internationally and for his contributions as a lawyer, professor, and university administrator.”

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Brian F. Havel has received a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from National University of Ireland, University College Dublin.

Professor Havel joined McGill University’s Faculty of Law of McGill University in 2017 as a full professor and director of the Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL). His research focuses on issues of public and private governance in the air transport and space industries.

Quebec’s Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur has approved McGill’s request to change the name of the common law degree conferred on graduates of the Faculty of Law’s double-degree McGill program from a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) to a Juris Doctor (JD). The BCL/LLB program will thus become the BCL/JD program. Graduates will continue to receive two diplomas; starting at the spring 2020 convocation, those degrees will be a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) and a Juris Doctor (JD).

McGill Law’s Career Development Office (CDO) is pleased to announce a collaboration with Loue 1 Robe / Loue 1 Tux. Through this partnership, we are launching an innovative pilot project that will allow students to rent professional attire for interviews and networking activities at an affordable price. Quebec-based company Tristan will provide the clothing.

This initiative is in line with several of the CDO's objectives, which includes fostering the inclusion of students from all walks of life as well as assisting with their entry into the profession.

Professor Yaëll Emerich has been named the 2019 winner of the Treatise and Monograph category for her book Droit commun des biens : Perspective transsystémique (Éditions Yvon Blais, 2017).

The Faculty of Law is pleased to welcome two new members to the Career Development Office’s (CDO) team: Staci Angelis, as career advisor, and Melissa Caruana, as administrative coordinator.

Staci Angelis recently completed her Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology at the University of Ottawa. Over the past year, she worked exclusively with university students to help them navigate various academic and career planning questions. She is excited to embark on this new challenge and to assist law students with their career goals.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Lara Khoury has received the Barreau du Québec’s Advocatus Emeritus (Ad. E.) designation. The title is awarded to members of the Quebec Bar who have distinguished themselves through a remarkable career, outstanding contributions to the profession, or constructive community work. Professor Khoury and this year’s other recipients will be celebrated at the Barreau’s annual gala, on Tuesday 19 November.
