Alumnus Fredric L. Carsley honoured

In May 2006, in Las Vegas, alumnus Fredric L. Carsley, BCL'74, LLB'75, a partner at De Grandpré Chait, was a recipient of the 2006 ICSC Trustees Distinguished Service Award, the highest award bestowed by the retail real estate industry, in honour of his dedication and hard work. For over 30 years, Mr. Carsley has practised commercial real estate law, with particular emphasis on major retail and office projects.

Clerking at the International Court of Justice, 2007-08 – Call for applications

Applications are now open for current BCL/LLB, LLM or DCL students graduating in June or November 2007, and recent graduates, to apply for a 9-month position as a Judicial Assistant at the International Court of Justice (The Hague), starting in September 2007. Deadline: Monday, January 15, 2007, 3 pm.

Launch of the Melvin L. Rothman Scholarship in Law

On December 7, 2006, family and friends of the Honourable Melvin L. Rothman (BA'51, BCL'54) held a reception celebrating the establishment of the Melvin L. Rothman Scholarship in Law. This entrance scholarship endowed in Mel Rothman's name commemorates his contribution to the legal profession as well his involvement within the community. It honours the support that Mel Rothman, one of the best jurists of his generation, has given to uncounted colleagues, notably his juniors, over a distinguished career of over 50 years.

Bravo to Law student Emmanuel Henri Ravanas

The Faculty of Law is pleased to report that LLM student Emmanuel Henri Ravanas has won, ex-aequo, the Prix de la Chaire du Notariat (administered by the Chair, which is at Université de Montréal). His topic is "Les difficultés d'introduction de la fiducie québécoise dans les pays de tradition civiliste connaissant l'institution de la réserve héréditaire. L'exemple de la France." The Faculty extends its congratulations to Mr. Ravanas and his supervisor, Professor Madeleine Cantin Cumyn.

'The October Crisis, 1970: An Insider's View,' by William Tetley

Professor William Tetley's book on the October Crisis was launched at an event held in the Atrium on November 30, 2006. Published by McGill-Queen's University Press, this 376-page work makes meticulous reference to now available documentation and passages from Tetley's own 1970 diary, and addresses important questions about the crisis, balancing historical interpretation and personal recollection.
