Joseph Arvay receives 2014 Litvack Award

Professor Lionel Smith Awarded 2014 Killam Fellowship

On March 18, 2014, the Arts Council of Canada announced the recipients of the 2014 Killam Fellowships. Among the five nominees is Professor Lionel Smith, director of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law and a James McGill Professor at the Faculty of Law of McGill University. Professor Lionel Smith's Killam award will allow him to carry out a two-year full-time research project entitled Conflicts of Interest and Fiduciary Obligations.

Mediation at McGill Bolstered by Generous Donation

Mediation at McGill (mediationmcgill.org), a community mediation initiative run by law students, recently received a generous donation of $2,500 to support its activities. The gift was made by Me Eric Cadl, Me Douglas Mitchell (BCL’88, LLB’88), Me Odette Jobin-Laberge, the Hon. Louise Otis, and Me Sylvain Lussier, five Montreal practitioners who are among the authors of the book Recours et procédures en appel, which received the Walter Owen Prize.

Good news from the Labour Law and Development Research Laboratory

The Labour Law and Development Research Laboratory (LLDRL) is delighted to share two pieces of good news with the community. First, Armel Brice Adanhounme (on left), who was a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the LLDRL from 2011-2013, was recently hired as a professor of Industrial Relations in the Département des sciences de la gestion at l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. We wish him the greatest of success in his new endeavor.

Robert Leckey joins Global Young Academy

The Faculty of Law is proud to announce that Professor Robert Leckey, a William Dawson Scholar in the Faculty of Law and a member of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law, has been elected to the Global Young Academy. Based in Berlin, the prestigious Academy consists of more than 155 young, independent researchers from around the world, who come together to address topics of global importance during a four-year term.

Jeffrey Edwards appointed to the Civil Division of the Court of Quebec

The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that on January 29, 2014, adjunct professor Jeffrey Edwards (BCL’86, LLB’86) was appointed to the Civil Division of the Court of Quebec in Montreal. Justice Edwards, who was admitted to the Bar in 1987, has mostly practiced civil and commercial litigation. He is also an accredited arbitrator and mediator, and as such, he specializes in the resolution of construction and product quality claims.

Stuart “Kip” Cobbett receives James A. Robb Award

On February 4, 2014, during an evening reception held in the Common Room, the Faculty of Law presented Stuart H. “Kip” Cobbett, BCL’72, with the James A. Robb Award to honour his exceptional work as a volunteer at the Faculty of Law and, more broadly, at McGill University. The event was attended by Principal Suzanne Fortier, Provost Anthony C. Masi, Chancellor Arnold Steinberg, Dean Daniel Jutras, Mr. Norm Steinberg, Chair of the Faculty Advisory Board, as well as by Mr. James Robb himself.

Éloïse Gagné, CEO of Hydro-Québec for a Day

LSA President Selected from a Pool of 500 Applicants This year’s President of the McGill Law Student Association, Éloïse Gagné, is one of 11 Canadian university students who will spend a day shadowing some of the country’s top senior executives. Gagné will shadow Thierry Vandal, President and CEO of Hydro-Québec, on February 12. The fourth-year student will have the opportunity to put into practice the concepts she has been learning at the Faculty, and to acquire real-world tools and skills she’ll need when launching her career.

Essay Contest: Nappert Prize in International Arbitration

The Nappert Competition is open to all students, junior scholars and junior practitioners from around the world. To be eligible for the prize, authors must be either currently enrolled in a B.C.L, LL.B., J.D., LL.M., D.C.L., or Ph.D. program (or their local equivalents). Those who are no longer in school must have taken their most recent degree within the last three years, or have been admitted to the bar (or the local equivalent) for the first time and for no more than three years (whichever is later).

McGill to host American Journal of Comparative Law

The Faculty of Law of McGill University is delighted to announce that starting January 2014, it will host The American Journal of Comparative Law, in partnership with the Georgetown University Law Center. Professor Helge Dedek, who is Director of the Institute of Comparative Law at McGill, has been named co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, together with two colleagues in Washington D.C.

Faculty of Law administrator Marie-Hélène Di Lauro retires after 38 years of service

On the evening December 5, 2013, dozens of people from the Faculty of Law community, along with family, friends and staff from other McGill faculties, gathered to bid adieu to Marie-Hélène Di Lauro, the Faculty’s long-serving Human Resources Advisor and Faculty Administrator.

Commemorating Alex Konigsberg

On October 29, 2013, the Faculty of Law held a reception in the Common Room to honour the memory of Alex Konigsberg QC, BCL’63, and to also mark the launch of the Alex Konigsberg Management & Law Bursary. The Faculty of Law was privileged to welcome Mr. Konigsberg’s widow, Vivian Konigsberg, and many members of his family. Several of his friends, colleagues and former McGill Law classmates also attended.

Prompted by several requests from alumni, we are examining the possibility of going paperless/digital in the near future, both to reduce our environmental footprint and to deliver news using your preferred medium.
