Martti Koskenniemi to receive LL.D. at upcoming Law spring convocation ceremony

McGill University has announced the 16 recipients of honorary doctorates for the upcoming spring convocation. Among them is Professor Martti Koskenniemi, who will be awarded the LL.D. distinction during the Faculty of Law’s convocation ceremony on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at 2 pm.

Students group wins Catalyst Award for Myko Social Score app

A group of McGill students and alums who worked on the Myko Social Score app have received the 2015 Catalyst Award for Excellence in Applied Student Research. The Award is sponsored by the McGill Office of Sustainability and is decided by a distinguished jury. DCL candidate Juan Pinto, undergrad law student Etienne Ravilet Guzman, as well as alumni Carolina Cruz-Vinaccia (LLM’11) and Guillaume Béal (LLM’14), were among the members of the multidisciplinary team that received the group award.

Kirsten Anker awarded inaugural Buxbaum Prize

The Younger Comparativists Committee (YCC) of the American Society of Comparative Law has selected Professor Kirsten Anker as the inaugural recipient of the Richard M. Buxbaum Prize for Teaching in Comparative Law.  In their nomination, the YCC praised Professor Anker for her “rich and creative efforts in the teaching of indigenous law, including her successful field course”. They also recognized “the wide scope of [her] teaching interests”, her "rigorous approach to comparative law and legal pluralism" and the interdisciplinary approach of her courses.

Access to Nahum Gelber Law Library during exam period / Accès à la Bibliothèque de droit Nahum Gelber pendant la période des examens

Access to Nahum Gelber Law Library during exam period Tuesday, April 7 to Wednesday, April 29, 2015 From Tuesday, April 7 to Wednesday, April 29, 2015, the main floor and second floor of the Nahum Gelber Law Library will be open for study to all McGill students during opening hours. During this period, only McGill Law students will be able to access the third, fourth and fifth floors using their ID cards on the card readers installed in both elevators and in access points.

Jaye Ellis Appointed Acting Director of School of Environment

Professor Jaye Ellis has been appointed Acting Director of the McGill School of Environment (MSE) for a one-year term beginning in September 2015. Professor Ellis, who holds a joint appointment with the MSE, teaches and conducts research in the fields of international environmental law, public international law, international legal theory and international relations. Previously, she was Associate Dean (Academic) at the Faculty from 2011 to 2014.

Frédéric Mégret Named William Dawson Scholar

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Frédéric Mégret has been named a William Dawson Scholar at McGill University. McGill’s William Dawson Scholar program recognizes scholars poised to become leaders in their fields and are awarded for a five-year term. As Dean Daniel Jutras said when he shared the news, “this honour underscores the depth and the quality of Frédéric Mégret’s exceptional scientific work.”

Margaret Somerville among invited speakers at inaugural BEINGS global summit

The Faculty was delighted to learn that Professor Margaret Somerville has been invited as a thought leader at the inaugural BEINGS Biotech and the Ethical Imagination Global Summit, which will take place May 17-19, 2015, in Atlanta, Georgia. Other luminaries such as Margaret Atwood, Arthur Caplan, Steven A. Pinker and Michael J. Sandel are among the distinguished invited speakers at the summit.

De Mestral named Senior Fellow at CIGI

Geneviève Saumier promoted to Full Professor

Cristina Birks and Ma’n H. Zawati named YBAM Lawyers of the Year

The Young Bar Association of Montreal (YBAM) unveiled the seven "YBAM Lawyers of 2014" at its 8th Annual Leaders of Tomorrow Gala, which was held last Friday. The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that among them are Cristina Birks (BCL / LLB'07) of Borden Ladner Gervais, in the Civil and Commercial Litigation category, and Ma'n H. Zawati, a DCL candidate at McGill, in the Alternative Career category.
