Staff can now create up to 20 Guest Wireless Access accounts at a time

McGill staff members can now create up to 20 Guest accounts at a time by using the self-service Guest Network Account Creation form. These accounts provide up to 30 days of wireless and/or McGill Network access (if the guest needs access to resources on the McGill network, departmental shares, etc.).

NEW: OneDrive cloud file storage for Faculty and Staff

As of March 30, 2015, all faculty and staff have access to Microsoft OneDrive for Business, providing 1 Terabyte of FREE file space on which to store both non-work related files and some* work-related files.

MATLAB coming April 1st for all McGill students

As of April 1st, the latest version of MATLAB® will be available for students to download for free via the McGill Software site (www.mcgill.ca/software). MATLAB is a high-level language and interactive environment that enables you to perform computationally intensive tasks faster than with traditional programming languages.

You may experience a problem signing into the myMcGill portal (http://mymcgill.mcgill.ca); the message will say "Incorrect username or password". Please try again -- you may have to do it a few times before gaining access.  This is an intermittent problem that we hope to resolve shortly. McGill’s phishing expedition

Educating computer users on the consequences of phishing is a challenge, especially since cybercriminals develop more sophisticated-looking emails and schemes every day. Web VPN service no longer available to access Library e-resources as of March 16, 2015

As of March 16, 2015, the Web VPN service will only be available to access archived online courses in WebCT (Fall 2010 to Winter 2012). Current students, faculty and staff can access Library e-resources via wireless network when on campus, and directly from the web browser via EZProxy or via McGill's VPN when off-campus. Alumni, who cannot use the McGill VPN, are now able to access a subset of Library e-resources directly from your web browser by signing in wit

McGill Password Security Questions (PSS) was decommissioned on February 23

As part of an ongoing effort to streamline services, the McGill Password Security Questions (PSS) tool was decommissioned on Monday, February 23. While this tool was initially launched with the goal of providing additional security questions and password reset functionality to our end-users, it essentially duplicated options that were already available in Minerva and caused user confusion.

It's time for a phishing expedition

Periodically, IT Services will send out mock phishing emails to the McGill community as part of a proactive approach to increase awareness of the dangers of phishing. Users who click on a link in one of these emails will be redirected to a page informing them that they have participated in a phishing awareness exercise, and will be encouraged to learn how to identify and avoid falling victim to these types of scams. Resolution: Windows update causes problems with Cisco AnyConnect VPN client

The Cisco AnyConnect client software, which is used to connect to McGill's VPN, does not work after the Windows update for IE11 is installed. The error message displayed is:"Failed to initialize connection subsystem". Microsoft has now released a “fix” that affected users can download and install. Go to: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3023607 At the bottom of the page, click the “Fix it” icon and Save the file to your computer.

Mathematica software now Free for Students

Mathematica, from Wolfram Research, is a powerful computational software used for mathematical modeling and data visualization.  McGill IT Services has been providing Mathematica to Faculty & Staff, and in computer labs across the University for the past few years.  Now it is also available to students via the McGill Software site (www.mcgill.ca/software).

Access to McGill Library e-resources to cease for all ineligible accounts as of February 16, 2015

As of Monday, February 16, 2015, access to McGill Library e-resources from off campus will end for all ineligible McGill affiliates. The Library's license agreements for electronic resources generally only cover off-campus access for current McGill students, faculty and staff. In July 2013, in an effort to comply with licensing agreements for electronic content, the McGill Library began a process of analyzing McGill user and affiliated accounts to ensure that only eligible users were able to access the Library’s e-resources. This work has now been completed.

Phishing scam: "RE: ITSUPPORT"

A phishing attempt is circulating with the subject line "RE: ITSUPPORT". The message says that your email will be blocked and you are advised to verify your email account by clicking on a fraudulent website. A sample of the email is shown below. Please DO NOT click on the link. Delete this email immediately! It does NOT come from a McGill source. It is a fraudulent attempt to gain access to your personal information. McGill never solicits any such information by email.

If you ride the inter-campus shuttle bus, you've probably found yourself waiting at the stop and wondering when it will arrive -- especially in these frigid January temperatures.  Now you don't have to guess... The McGill Shuttle Bus Tracker is a mobile-friendly website that uses Google Maps to show you the location of each bus along its route, and how fast it's moving.

MS Office 365 ProPlus now available for faculty & staff

McGill faculty and staff members now have FREE access to Office 365 ProPlus, which includes the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Office apps. The service allows you to install the Office suite on up to 5 personal devices*, including PCs, Macs, and 5 iPad and Windows tablets.

Resolved: Issues activating Office 365 ProPlus applications on iOS mobile devices

Resolved - January 15, 2015:Microsoft has released an update for Office Mobile Apps, now available on the App Store, which resolves the activation issue reported below.  Please upgrade to this new version (v1.5) now.
