A variety of emails that look like they are coming from a McGill employee are targeting the McGill community.

Staff should question the legitimacy of unusual emails especially if the request involves money, there is a sense of urgency, or the sender is unavailable for confirmation.  Recent emails request the purchase of digital gift cards.

January 28th is Data Privacy Day. Data Privacy Day is an international effort which began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. Data Protection Day commemorates the January 28, 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. The Data Privacy Day campaign is officially led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).

There is a phishing email targeting the McGill community, with the subject "Important Alert from McGill University Admin" and signature "Privacy Policy | Customer Support, Office 365 Mailbox Support Team". The message asks recipients to read important unread messages. Click the screenshot on the left to view an example of the message.
