Congrats to soprano Brittany Rae (Grad Dip ’18) and pianist Jesse Plessis (Current DMus) for winning this year’s Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition. The duo performed works by Canadian composers Jocelyn Morlock, Gordon Fitzell, Ana Sokolovic, and Claude Vivier.

Prof. Shawn Mativetsky has released ’RUDIMENTAAL’, a collection of rudimental snare drum pieces inspired by the tabla drumming of North India. By bridging together two principal percussion instruments and their respective musical traditions, the book works as a gateway into North Indian drumming for drummers and percussionists from all backgrounds.

When McGill University announced that Fall 2020 activities will be offered predominantly through remote delivery, Schulich’s professors went to work preparing innovative new courses that would temporarily replace most large and small ensembles. Carissa Klopoushak (MMus'08, DMus'13) has been appointed Interim Artistic Director of the Ottawa Chamberfest! 
 
Currently a member of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Ironwood Quartet, she also serves as co-Artistic Director of both the Ritornello and Classical Unbound chamber music festivals. Carissa performs on a Vuillaume violin on loan from the Canada Council Musical Instrument bank and officially started her new role at the Ottawa Chamberfest on August 17, 2020.

A large congratulations to Bo-rum Hammond (current MMus) and Jarred Dunn (current DMus), who have won first and second prize respectively in the “University Graduate” category of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association (CFMTA)’s annual National Essay Competition! This competition invites submissions of essays on topics related to music teaching, pedagogy, or performance practice. Entries are judged by nationally recognized scholars in the fields of music pedagogy and performance and winning essays are published in the CFMTA magazine and website.

MONTREAL, QUEBEC, July 31, 2020 - In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and with the health and well-being of the composers, musicians, jury, and audience in mind, the 2020 edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers (GSC) has been postponed until September 2021.   

Dr. Graham Sommer’s intention for this competition was to create works with the potential to connect with the concert-going public, and we are confident that this decision supports his vision.

Twenty-six-year-old bassist, composer, and arranger Carl Mayotte (MMus ’19) has been named this year’s Révélation Radio-Canada in the jazz category! Performing at various events and bars since the age of 16, Carl has travelled with his art through Quebec and France as a solo artist, as well as alongside other musicians and bands of all kinds.

Analytical Essays on Music by Women Composers: Concert Music, 1960–2000 by Laurel Parsons and Dean Brenda Ravenscroft has won the 2017 Pauline Alderman Award for Outstanding Scholarship on Women in Music in the book category! An adjudicator of the award praised the book for its incredible and necessary research and was specifically impressed with the original and rigorous analysis of music by women composers.
