Larissa Girvan, who studies Kindergarten and Elementary Education with our Department of Integrated Studies in Education, and Fiona Benson, our Director of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs with the Office of Internships and Student Affairs (ISA), were cited by CJAD.

In an airy open area at the back of the first floor of the former library of the Faculty Education is a colourful space filled with art supplies and work tables. Along the wall there are bins and boxes of fabric, coloured pencils and paints, sketch pads, paper, and all manner of recycled objects, ready to be remade into anything the visitor desires. The society acts as a center for funding, fundraising and the organization of events, committees and initiatives; as advocates for the student body; and as a hub for student life in the Faculty of Education.

Trisha Caplin is a licensed practical nurse living and working in Gesgapegiag, a First Nations community on the south shore of the Gaspésie. She loves nursing, but it can be a 24/7 job. That’s not the best fit now that Caplin has an infant daughter, so a career change is in order. She wants to become a teacher. That means getting a Bachelor of Education, but the nearest universities are in Fredericton (approximately 450 kilometres away) and Saint John (closer to 550 kilometres) – too far to commute, and Caplin doesn’t want to move her young family away from their community.
