Ph.D. student Meltem Al has been awarded a studentship from the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (IJURR) Foundation in the amount 12,000 pounds sterling (approx. $21,000 CDN) for her project, “Spaces of capital, religion, and ideology: Fundamentalist housing enclaves in Istanbul.”

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Canada Council for the Arts have announced the recipients of the Governor General’s Medals in Architecture.  Amongst the 12 winning projects are two by Saucier + Perrotte Architectes and one by Atelier TAG and Jodoin Lamarre Pratte Architectes.

On January 25, 2018 at Government House in St. John’s, Prof. Robert Mellin received a Lieutenant Governor’s award for his design of a private residence in Middle Arm, Newfoundland. This is a triennial event, celebrating outstanding contributions to the field of architecture and the built environment of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the award recognizes the important role architects and architecture have in building communities across the province.

A McGill student team won second prize in the Architecture Éphémère competition at the Ice Hotel outside Quebec City in Valcartier at the opening celebration on Friday, January 19.  The team of U1 students Shengkun Tommy Yang, Hongwon Antony Suh, and Marina Dentico won second prize for their room Voler la vedette.

Prof. Robert Mellin has been named to the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador for his dedication to the architecture of the province involving heritage conservation, research, and architectural design. The investiture will take place on January 31, 2018, at Government House in St. John’s. From the website of the Order: "The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador is the highest honour of the province.

Atelier Big City has won a Prix d'excellence en architecture 2017 from the Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) in the category Bâtiments et ensembles résidentiels de type multifamilial for their housing project U.  The principals of Atelier Big City are Clifford C.F. Wong Professor of Practice Howard Davies, Randy Cohen, and Anne Cormier (all B.Arch. 1982).

Ph.D. student Maria Valentina Davila has won a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) doctoral fellowship in the amount of $60,000 for research supporting her dissertation topic, "Women on the home front: Venezuelan domestic workers and the acquisition of architecture."
