DESCRIPTION:Item 1: Gopu Nair\nThe Role of Agricultural Engineers\n\nA disc
ussion will be presented on the current and future situations\nof agricult
ure engineers and agricultural engineering and its\nvarious branches. The
importance of agricultural engineers in a\nworld of growing population and
declining land resources will be\ndiscussed.\n\nGopu Raveendran Nair is f
rom India and is currently pursuing his\nPhD under the supervision of Dr.
 Raghavan.\n\n\nItem 2: Palaniappan Thyagarajan\nTUTICORIN – A Pearl of a C
ity\n\nThrough this presentation the details of my hometown\, which is\nfa
mous for its pearls\, will be explained as well as the origin of\nits name
\, our people\, festivals and the foods that we eat. The\neconomy and the
attractions of Tuticorin will also be\npresented.\n\nPalaniappan Thyagaraj
an was born in India where he pursued a\nBachelor of Technology in Biotech
nology at Tamilnadu Agricultural\nUniversity. Currently he is completing a
Master’s degree in\nBioresource Engineering under the supervision of Dr.
 Valerie\nOrsat.\n\n\nItem 3: Inneke Victor\nThe Aren Tree: a multipurpose
palm\n\nThe Aren tree (Arenga pinnata Merr) is a palm tree that grows in\n
tropical forests such as those in Indonesia. Places like Tomohon\,\nNorth
Sulawesi\, Indonesia use most parts of the tree for a number\nof purposes.
The Aren tree provides many important products that\nhave great market va
lue and are of economical importance to the\nnative population. Among othe
r uses\, the sweet sap is also consumed\nby the local people as a sweetene
r and is the basis for Aren\nsugar.\nInneke Victor was born and grew up in
North Sulawesi\, Indonesia.\nShe graduated from the Industrial Engineerin
g Department at ITM\,\nManado\, Indonesia\, and did her Master’s in Proces
 s Engineering at\nUNSW\, Sydney\, Australia. She received a ‘training in j
ob’ in\nHotelschool\, the Hague\, the Netherlands when she worked at DLSM
in\nManado. In order to create a better processing method for Aren\nsugar
production\, she started a PhD at Bioresource Engineering\nDepartment last
fall and she is now working under the supervision\nof Dr. Valérie Orsat.
 \n\nItem 4: Anteneh Belayneh\nDrought Forecasting in Ethiopia\n\nDroughts
are a normal and recurrent feature of climate. They can\ncause significant
damage to both the natural environment and to\nhuman society when they pe
rsist for a long period of time. Drought\nmonitoring and forecasting play
a significant role in mitigating\nthe potential impacts of drought on the
environment and in the\nplanning and management of water resources. In thi
s presentation\, a\nmethod based on coupling discrete wavelet transforms (
WT) and\nartificial neural networks (ANN) is presented for forecasting\ndr
ought.    \n\nAneteneh is currently a first year Master’s student in the\n
Department of Bioresource Engineering of McGill\, working under the\nsuper
vision of Dr. Adamowski. He completed his Bachelor’s of\nScience at McGill
University and his research interests now lie in\nhydrologic forecasting.
\n\n\nItem 5: Muhammad Azhair Baig\nTwo Capitals of Punjab\n\nAfter the pa
rtition of British India\, the Punjab region was split\nbetween India and
Pakistan. Lahore which was the traditional\ncapital of the combined Punjab
\, became part of Pakistan. India then\nconstructed a new capital for its
part of the Punjab\, the modern\ncity of Chandigarh. In this presentation
the two cities will be\ncompared in terms of architectural style and cultu
ral\nheritage.\n\nMuhammad Azhar Baig is from Pakistan. He did his Master’
s degree in\nwater resources engineering at the University of Engineering\
,\nLahore. He then worked as a groundwater modeling consultant for\nthree
years. Later he joined the public sector University of\nPakistan as Assist
ant Professor. Currently he is enrolled as a PhD\nstudent in the departmen
t of Bioresource Engineering\, working under\nthe supervision of Dr. Shiv
 Prashar.\n
