DESCRIPTION:Peel apart the layers of graphite and carefully observe the\nre
sulting flakes\; you will find graphene\, a single atomic sheet of\ncarbon
atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice. The newest member of\nthe graphiti
c family to join the fullerenes and carbon nanotubes\,\nmany of graphene's
unique physical properties can be attributed to\nelectrons behaving like
massless particles. I will show how the\noptical properties of graphene ar
 e described by a fundamental\nconstant of nature\, the fine-structure cons
tant\, and how this\nallows us to count atomic layers using only a simple
optical\nmicroscope. I will also describe the electronic properties of\ngr
aphene\, including its ability to function as a transistor and the\nsensit
ivity of its electrical conductance to the environment.\nFuture research d
irections and potential applications of graphene\nwill be briefly discusse
 d.\n
