DESCRIPTION:Can we erase memories for therapeutic\nbenefits?\nBy Karim Nade
r (Psychology\, McGill University)\nIf we could functionally erase a memor
y to make someone better\nwould that be acceptable? What if the memory was
of a trauma that\nhas incapacitated someone for decades? Maybe the memori
es are of\ndrug addiction? If we could erase these memories shouldn’t we?
Why\ndo we need memories if they keep us down? In a very playful manner\,
\nmy talk will address some of the science that is at the heart of\nmemory
research today. The science suggests that memories can be\nfunctionally e
rased. This science was taken and expanded to the\npoint of fiction in the
film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless\nMind (suggested viewing for the au
dience). \nOrganized by the Royal Society of Canada and McGill University
with\nthe express purpose of fostering communication between scientists\ni
n different disciplines as well as between scientists and the\npublic. Cut
ting Edge Lectures in Science are made possible\nthrough the generous supp
ort of Heather Munroe-Blum (McGill\nPrincipal)\, Richard Levin (Dean of Me
dicine)\, Martin Grant (Dean of\nScience)\, Anthony Masi (Provost) and Den
is Thérien (Vice-Principal\,\nResearch and International Relations). Lectu
res are followed by\na vin d'honneur reception. Free\, everyone welcome.\n
