DESCRIPTION:Attitudes about physics and how they impact and are impacted by
\ninstruction\nStudents’ beliefs about physics are very important in how t
hey\nlearn the subject and their desire to pursue a physics degree. We\nha
ve developed and validated surveys that probe students’ beliefs\nabout phy
sics and chemistry and about how these subjects are\nlearned. These survey
s provide a measure of students’ beliefs on a\nnovice-to-expert scale that
can be used to investigate the impact\nof teaching or relationships betwe
en beliefs and other educational\noutcomes of interest. These surveys are
being used in courses\nacross North America\, including more than 15\,000
students in over\n50 courses at the University of Colorado. We see how bel
iefs\ncorrelate with learning of content\, choice of major\, and interest\
,\nand how different teaching practices impact beliefs in positive and\nne
gative ways. We have also seen surprising results with regard to\nthe beli
efs students have when they enter the university\,\nparticularly in how th
eir beliefs about chemistry and physics can\ndiffer.\n
