Recent McGill Graduate Victoria Anson Appointed to Two Prestigious Boards

Published: 17 July 2025

Only a few weeks after graduation, Victoria Anson (Materials Engineering, Class of 2025) has been appointed to two international boards: the Copper Club Board of Directors and the ASM International Board of Trustees. Her dual appointments highlight her involvement in the mining and metals, metallurgical, and materials industries.

The Copper Club is a charitable organization dedicated to advancing the interests of the copper industry, notably through its educational grants program, which supports students with the potential to make a meaningful impact in the field. Last year, Victoria was in fact awarded the 2024 Copper Club Lord Bagri Scholarship. Estefania Medina Guzman from Universidad de Chile, the 2025 scholarship recipient, and Victoria will be the first two students to ever be appointed to the Copper Club’s Board of Directors. This has been made possible thanks to the leadership of Stephen T. Higgins, CAO of Freeport-McMoRan and current Copper Club chairman, as well as through the support of the Copper Club board members.

In June, Victoria traveled to New York City to speak at the Copper Club’s Annual Dinner, where she reflected on the influence the Lord Bagri Scholarship has had on her life. She also participated in a panel during the Young Leader Forum held the following day.

Just days after being inducted into the Copper Club Board, Victoria was selected to serve on the ASM International Board of Trustees. ASM International, formerly known as the American Society for Metals, is a globally recognized professional society for material scientists, metallurgists, and materials engineers.

Through the competitive ASM Student Board Member Program, which is open to Materials Advantage student members worldwide, Victoria will be joining Emily Ghosh (Boston University) and Wyeth Haddock (University of Connecticut) as one of this year’s three student board members. Already active in the ASM International Montreal Chapter, Victoria is looking forward to contributing to board projects focused on student engagement and outreach. She hopes to provide a unique perspective shaped by her experience in both the materials engineering and extractive metallurgy sectors.

What’s next for Victoria post-graduation? This September, she will begin a direct-entry Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto, under the supervision of Professor Jay Werber in the Advanced Membranes Lab. We wish Victoria the very best in her future endeavours.
