Please note that as of April 16th, 2025, Mitacs and NSERC have made modifications to the Alliance-Mitacs Accelerate Joint Program. These include the immediate introduction of a new 2-part streamlined joint application process and changes to the funding model for 2026. Further details are provided below.

More information and guidance will be shared at the Mitacs-led information session being held on Thursday June 5th from 3:00-4:00 p.m. (E.T.)

1) Application Process

Key points of the new application process:

  • Applications must follow the new 2-part process.
  • Part 1 of the new application must be submitted alongside the NSERC Alliance application, with Mitacs accessing and validating the materials during the NSERC review stage.
  • Part 1 will include the general project information and details on the internships and hiring strategy, but it will no longer encompass the technical content of the proposal
  • If approved for funding by NSERC, applicants will need to submit to Mitacs an unedited copy of the Mitacs Part 1 along with a copy of the NSERC notice of award.
  • Part 2 of the process will include a technical proposal to be submitted to Mitacs for review and approval. The intern activation can only proceed after NSERC has approved the project for funding.
  • New application forms will be used for both Part 1 and Part 2 of the application process.

We strongly encourage applicants planning joint NSERC + Mitacs projects in the coming year to contact their Mitacs Advisor early to understand the new process and obtain the updated forms.

2) Funding Model

Effective as of April 1, 2026, partner funds can no longer be used to meet the matching requirements of both Mitacs and NSERC for new applications. Partners will be required to provide funds separately towards both Mitacs and NSERC programs. Ongoing internship units approved before the deadlines for submission of Part 1 and Part 2 with this new process will not be impacted by this funding change.

For researchers willing to submit a proposal under the current funding model, please take into account some important dates determined by Mitacs:

  • December 19, 2025: Deadline to submit to Mitacs the NSERC notice of award and the unedited Part 1 using current funding rules (joint cost-sharing).
  • March 4, 2026: Deadline to submit Part 2 (intern activation) under current funding model.
