DESCRIPTION: \n\nPhD Oral Defense of Benjamin Ponchon\, Department of Anima
l Science\n\nThe transitions between lactation and dry periods constitute
a very critical phase in the reproduction cycle of dairy cows. After cessa
tion of milking\, the mammary gland is highly susceptible to new intra-mam
mary infections because of udder engorgement and milk leakage as well as a
weakened immune system. In the absence of teat stimulation and udder empt
ying\, the mammary gland regresses during a remodeling process known as in
volution. This physiological event involves a decrease in milk component s
ynthesis and secretion by mammary epithelial cells\, renewing of a portion
of the mammary epithelium\, activation of different proteases and an incr
ease in the permeability of tight junctions linking epithelial cells toget
her. However\, the exact elements triggering involution are not fully eluc
idated yet.\n\nEveryone in the McGill community is welcome to attend a PhD
oral defense. Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our Ph
 D candidates.\n\n \n\n \n
