\nThe speakers will discuss how each of their particular methods/approache
s can lead to improving health in populations. The objective of this semin
ar is to familiarize the participants with various health research approac
hes and how all of these play important roles in improving health in indiv
iduals and populations. Dr. Stone will discuss the age-old nature vs. nurt
ure debate will be revisited with a new twist. Growing evidence suggests t
hat environmental factors\, including the experiences of our parents\, can
fundamentally alter the function of our genes\, change our behavior and i
ncrease risk factors for a wide range of chronic conditions. The potential
implications of these recent insights on the role of socioeconomic factor
s in public health will be highlighted. Dr. Feine will present the argumen
t that double-blind randomized clinical trials are not the best way to ass
ess the efficacy of palliative therapies for chronic conditions. She will
present studies in chronic pain and oral implants for complete denture pro
stheses to support this hypothesis. Dr. Bedos will explain how qualitative
research has changed his life and transformed his research. Dr. Srivastav
a will briefly talk about her journey of discovering her relationship with
the society as a researcher- from being a neutral outsider to a liberal r
elativist to an overt partisan. She will highlight the potential of partic
ipatory action research in changing/informing policies with several exampl
es\, including her PhD research proposal.
