Welcome to our two judges in residence

Published: 6 September 2011

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that the Honourable Carol Cohen (on left) and the Honourable Yves-Marie Morissette (on right) will be judges in residence at McGill during the 2011-2012 university year.

Carol Cohen, BA'77, BCL'82, a judge at the Quebec Superior Court, will teach a specialized course this winter on jury trials as seen through the eyes of a judge. Using murder trials as a backdrop, her course will cover questions of procedure, evidence and trial process.

During his stay, Yves-Marie Morissette, a judge of the Court of Appeal of Quebec and former professor (1977-2002) and Dean (1989-1994) at the Faculty of Law, will prepare an article on the evolution of the appeal through time, with a historical component and a modern take on the sharing of responsibilities between trial courts and appellate courts. He plans to split his time between Montreal, Paris and Oxford.

Dean Daniel Jutras (at centre on photo) points out that, each year, the Faculty hosts a "prominent member of the judiciary who spends time at McGill to share insights and judicial experiences with students and professors. This year we are truly fortunate to be enjoying the visit of two judges."
