An Ontario-based anti-poverty group, the Colour of Poverty, featuring your regular "ethnics" and your Conservative-style "very ethnics," had decided it was time to tell Canadian politicians to "Beat it,'' sung to the tune of the iconic Michael Jackson song. The battle for the votes of Canada's cultural communities had come down to "our food and our dance,'' says Avvy Go, a Toronto lawyer and member of the anti-poverty coalition.

Lots of new Canadians want to be treated like Canadians, not a visible minority,'' says Elisabeth Gidengil, a McGill University professor who has studied the bleeding of ethnic support for the Liberals.
