Times Transcript - Shining light on eating disorders

Published: 21 May 2011

Dr. Howard Steiger says not everyone who's "born more than thin is overweight."

Steiger is the director of the Eating Disorders Program at the Douglas University Institute in Montreal and is professor of psychiatry and psychology at McGill University. He is one of Canada's top experts in the issue of eating disorders.

He was in Moncton yesterday [Friday] speaking to a full auditorium about the issues surrounding the disorders.

"Eating disorders can exist without underlying disorders," Steiger said. "But the thing is, is that people who have other psychiatric disorders are often made very susceptible. It's as if they are living at the edge of a cliff and the dieting pushes them over quicker."
