Special guests to attend McGill installation

Quebec’s Minister of Higher Education Pierre Duchesne will participate in tomorrow’s ceremony

Many special guests will attend the installation of Professor Suzanne Fortier as 17th Principal and 13th Vice-Chancellor of McGill University on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, where His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will entrust the Charter and Seal of the University to Prof. Fortier’s keeping.

As part of the ceremony, Pierre Duchesne, Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, will deliver a short address on behalf of the Quebec Government.

Guy Breton, rector of the Université de Montréal, will speak on behalf of Canadian universities. Representatives of McGill faculty, staff and students will also present greetings to the Principal.

Guests in attendance also include Members of National Assembly Pierre Arcand, Geoffrey Kelley and Stéphane Le Bouyonnec, Senator Michael Meighen, the heads of Bishop’s University, Concordia University, École Polytechnique, École de technologie supérieure, Institut national de la recherche scientifique, the Ontario College of Art and Design, Queen’s University, The Rockefeller University, St. Francis Xavier University, St. Mary’s University, the University of Alberta, the Université du Québec à Montréal and the University of Saskatchewan. The presidents of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, as well as the Chair of the Science, Technology and Innovation Council, will also be attending.

In addition, honorary doctorates will be bestowed upon Nathalie Bondil, chief curator and director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and conductor Boris Brott, artistic director of the McGill Chamber Orchestra.

The ceremony will be held at McGill’s Redpath Hall, 3461 McTavish St., in Montreal. The academic procession will start at approx. 9:40 a.m. in front of McGill’s Arts Building (853 Sherbrooke St. West). The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. and end at approx. 12 p.m. (noon).
