Rookie Murphy tallies two TDs as Redmen beat Blues for first time in 41 years

TORONTO - Freshman running back Sean Murphy of Ottawa came off the bench to run for 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns as McGill opened their 130th campaign with a convincing 40-17 preseason victory over Toronto in university football before 1,000 at Varsity Centre, Saturday.

It was the first meeting in 18 years between the Old Four rivals in a long-standing rivalry that dates back to 1881. It had been nine consecutive losses and 41 years since the Redmen last defeated the Blues, coming away with 17-0 conquest on Nov. 8, 1969 to win the Yates Cup. U of T still holds the upper hand with a lifetime 95-51-6 head-to-head series record.

Murphy, a 5-foot-10, 210-pound product of the Ottawa Sooners, scored on his first play, a 59-yard TD romp at 12:41 of the second stanza. He averaged an impressive 9.9 yards per rush on nine carries after relieving starter Tyler Kuprowski (7 carries, 36 yards).

“Murphy ran the ball with confidence,” said Sonny Wolfe, in his fourth season as head coach of the Redmen. “He had good speed and cut real well through the holes.”

The game featured 21 penalties, six fumbles and five interceptions. McGill, which fumbled on each of their first four drives, finished with 542 yards on net offence, compared to Toronto’s 228. The Redmen had a 24-18 edge in first downs.

Both teams got off to a messy start as McGill quarterback Jonathan Collin of Greenfield Park, Que., and Toronto pivot Andrew Gillis of Markham, Ont., each threw an interception on their first and second drives, respectively.

“That’s the benefit of playing an exhibition game… to get rid of the rust,” said Wolfe. “We had a miserable start on offence but our defence was great, especially early in the game as we could easily have been down 21-0. They bailed us out and kept us in long enough to get our offence going.”

Collin connected on 11 of 17 attempts for 208 yards and one TD before giving way to under-study Ryne Bondy, a sophomore from Richmond Hill, Ont., in the second half. Bondy completed 7 of 13 passes for 135 yards and was replaced in the final quarter by Connor Ogilvie, who was good on 4-of-7 attempts, passing for 62 yards and one interception. He also scored a touchdown on a one-yard sneak.

Twelve different McGill receivers caught passes, led by Charles-Antoine-Sinotte who snared four for 80 yards and one TD, a 48-yard pass-and-run play. The fifth-year veteran from Trois-Rivieres, Que., is the all-time leading receiver in CIS history with 199 career receptions in 30 regular season games.

Toronto opened the scoring after a Collin fumble during McGill's third series, which was recovered by Blues senior defensive lineman Adam Fehler. That sparked a seven-play, 58-yard drive down the field. Gillis then found rookie receiver Alex Pierchalski of London, Ont., for a 13-yard touchdown reception.

McGill got back on track and evened the score after driving 103 yards, capped by the long scoring play to Sinotte.

The Redmen took control of the game in the second quarter. After the Redmen took an 8-7 lead on a missed 43-yard field-goal attempt by third-year kicker Austin Anderson at 7:31.

Murphy then hit pay-dirt with a 59-yard rushing play to put McGill ahead 15-7 and Anderson, from Canmore, Alta., added field-goals from 28 and 30 yards, respectively, in the last 35 seconds to give McGill a 21-7 halftime lead. The all-conference place-kicker ended up 2-for-4 on the day, including a missed 36-yarder in the final stanza. He also averaged 51.7 yards on six kickoffs.

Murphy added his second TD on a four-yard run just three minutes into the second half. A 45-yard interception return by Joff Gorin of Montreal on the ensuing play gave the Redmen a commanding 35-7 lead.

Three minutes later, Blues freshman tailback Aaron Milton of Whitby, Ont., hauled in a six-yard TD reception from Gillis to shorten the gap to 35-14.

McGill added five more points on a pair of safeties and a rouge by Anderson. Toronto replied with a safety and a rouge to round out the scoring.

Defensively, McGill freshman linebacker Alexandre Bernard registered a game-high six tackles. Three Redmen defenders picked off passes, including the aforementioned Gorin, plus Courtney Bishop and Patrick Bourgon. Three other Redmen were credited with quarterback sacks, including Ben Thompson, Dave Beauchamp and Alex Hutchison.

For Toronto, Gillis was good on 10 of 22 pass attempts, throwing for two majors and two interceptions, while Varsity Blues player of the game Jonathan Wright racked up 145 all-purpose yards, with three kickoff returns for 79 yards, three punt returns for 37 and two receptions for 29. Linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza led Toronto's defence with five solo tackles.

GAME NOTES: McGill dressed 56 players for the game and each one saw some action. U of T dressed 72 players. The limit during regular season and playoffs is 45 players… New McGill punter Tomas Silva, a transfer from the Western Ontario Mustangs, averaged 40 yards on his four punts. “It’s the first time that we’ve had someone kick the ball that well in my four seasons here,” noted Wolfe. In fact, the last punter to reach that lofty plateau was 27 games ago, when Robert Eeuwes averaged 40.0 (or more) twice during the 2006 season (Week 1 vs Bishop’s, Week 5 vs Concordia)… McGill's offensive line coach Matthieu Quiviger and Varsity Blues alumni Glenn McCausland, both of whom played in the last meeting between these teams in 1992, performed the ceremonial coin toss before the game. Quiviger was a two-time all-Canadian offensive tackle with the Redmen. A 1994 draft pick of the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders, he played for the Montreal Alouettes in 1996. McCausland, a 1994 draft pick of the Ottawa Renegades, was the player of the game in the Blues 1993 Vanier Cup victory.

In other CIS pre-season football action Saturday, Calgary defeated Alberta 20-14 in a Battle of Alberta match-up. Elsewhere in CIS play over the past week, Saskatchewan rallied with five consecutive touchdowns in the final 18 minutes to defeat Western Ontario 40-12. On Thursday, Concordia defeated Guelph 40-23 in Montreal. On Wednesday, Sherbrooke exploded for 24 points in the second quarter en route to a 41-0 blowout over the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees.
