Quebec port hiring causes a stir

Mario Girard says he's looking forward to the challenges of running one of the oldest and busiest ports in Canada. But first, he'll have to weather the ill winds of public opinion that have been blowing over his appointment as the next president and chief executive officer of the Port of Quebec.  

The brouhaha began last month, when it was reported in the Quebec City daily Le Soleil that Girard does not have a university degree.

He is confident his future accomplishments will help people forget the current controversy. That probably will be the case, says Edward Aronson, a philosopher and adjunct professor at McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management who specializes in organizational leadership. "For leaders to be effective, they need to come across as being clean," Aronson said.
