Puel and Bielby named McGill Olde Orchard athletes of the week

MONTREAL - Charlène Puel, a native of Lyon, France and Steven Bielby of Pte. Claire, Que., are the McGill University - Ye Olde Orchard athletes of the week, for the period ending Feb. 26, 2012.

 

Puel, a 5-foot-2, middle distance runner on the track & field team, won three gold medals and received a major award at the RSEQ provincial track and field championship in Trois-Rivières last weekend. The 21-year-old mathematics senior, earned all-conference honours and qualified for the CIS championships by finishing first in both the 600m (1:32.69) and the 1000m (2:52.38). She also helped the 4x400 relay squad finish second. In addition, Puel received the conference's performance-of the-year award (for track events) as a result of her time at the McGill Team Challenge in January, when she established a meet record in the 1,000m in 2:48.26, which currently ranks as the fastest time in the Quebec conference and the fourth quickest in the country this season.

 

Bielby, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound multi-distance swimmer with the Redmen, won a pair of bronze medals at the CIS championships in Montreal over the weekend. The 22-year-old electrical engineering senior finished third in the 200-metre individual medley (2:01.47) and was third in the 400m individual medley (4:18.18). He also helped break school records on both the 4x100 medley relay (3:42.63) and the 4x200 freestyle relay (7:25.91).  A product of John Abbott College, the 22-year-old engineering senior has become McGill's most decorated swimmer, with 11 career CIS medals -- a school record six gold, to go along with one silver and four bronzes.

 

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
