In praise of vital democracies

Obama's inauguration and Isreal's election were occasions for non-partisan celebration of an extraordinary form of government (Op-ed by Gil Troy, history prof at McGill):

Canadians should delight in the democratic dynamism demonstrated by two close allies this week - the United States and Israel. Both America's inauguration and Israel's election demonstrated democracy's vitality. In toasting these friends, Canadians can remember valuable lessons about the rational and mystical elements of this extraordinary form of government, based on liberty, mutual respect and consent of the governed.
