Pirali rocks, Redmen roll, Sherbrooke stunned
MONTREAL - Rookie Yannick Pirali scored a game-high 22 points and was one of four Redmen to reach double figures in scoring as McGill shocked Sherbrooke 3-1 with a home-court victory in men's volleyball before 252 noisy fans at Love Competition Hall, Friday. After dropping a heart-thumping opening set by a 30-28 score, the Redmen rallied for to win the next three sets 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23.
It was McGill's first win in eight league matches and their first against a Quebec opponent in 10 contests, dating back to Jan. 9, 2009 after a 3-1 win at Sherbrooke. That's the result that snapped the team's 85-match losing streak to Quebec teams, dating back to 2002.
Pirali, a 6-foot-6, 192-pound power-hitter on exchange from Belgium, amassed game-highs of 18 kills, two aces and a pair of stuff blocks, to go along with 34 digs.
Other offensive stars were Matt Mosseler, a senior from Fredericton, N.B., who contributed 10 kills and 34 digs, while sophomore Ben Lehr of Birmingham, Mich., had six kills, one ace and three blocks. Freshman Pierre-Yves Brennan of Granby, Que., tallied his 10 points on five kills and five blocks.
Sophomore Jeff Porter, a 5-foot-9 libero, added 31 digs to anchor the defence.
"All the guys were super good tonight," said fifth-year Redmen head coach Simon Berleur. "We fought hard, showed more aggressiveness, confidence and character. This win salvaged our season as we now have a chance to catch Sherbrooke for the last playoff spot."
The Redmen (1-7) now trail third-place Sherbrooke (2-6) by two points in the Quebec conference standings. McGill closes out the fall semester on the other side of the town when the make a 20-minute jaunt around Mt. Royal to take on the second-place Montreal Carabins (4-4).
