MONTREAL - Véronique Maranda, a senior from Montreal, converted a direct free kick at the 55-minute mark and that proved to be the difference as the No. 2-ranked Montreal Carabins edged No.10-McGill 2-1 in the Quebec university women's soccer opener before a crowd of 403 at Molson Stadium, Thursday.

Montrealer Eva Thouvenot-Hebert, a sophomore forward, had opened the scoring for the Carabins in the 11th minute of play, when she chipped a pass from Claire Robbins of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que.

Trailing 2-0, Katherine Green, a defender from Richmond Hill, Ont., gave the Martlets false hope when she headed in a corner kick from Maggie Keating of Bridgenorth, Ont., and beat goaltender Martine Julien in the 76th minute.

Julien, a sophomore from LaSalle, Que., earned the victory, while Shimone Slomowitz of West Vancouver took the loss for McGill.

"We had a very poor first half and seemed unable to follow the game plan," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "Yes we are a young team but our youth can not be an excuse for the lack of energy that I saw over the first 45 minutes.

"At halftime, we made a tactical change and put in a different system, which brought back some new life but their next goal, on a questionable call by the referee, slowed our momentum a bit. Despite that, we bounced back and scored but to beat a solid team like the Carabins, we have to come out with more energy, better determination and a higher quality of technical play."

The player-of-the-game awards, as selected by the opposing head coaches, went to Montreal's Emilie Mercier of Longueuil, Que., and to McGill's Claire Hooper of London, Ont.

The Carabins (1-0) will host Concordia (0-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m., while McGill (0-1) travels to Sherbrooke (0-0) the same day for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
