LENNOXVILLE – Moustafa El Zanaty of Montreal scored a game-high 35 points in 39 minutes of court time and led visiting McGill to a key 87-66 win over Bishop’s in men’s university basketball before 900 at the Mitchell gym in Lennoxville, Friday.

It capped a masterful sweep over the Gaiters as rookie Anneth Him-Lazarenko notched a “double-double” and McGill rallied from a 10-point deficit to upset the Gaiters 56-47 in the women’s game.

El Zanaty, a 6-foot-4 guard who reached the 30-point plateau for the seventh time this season, shot 11-for-24 from the floor, making four of 10 attempts from three-point range. He also nailed nine of 10 free-throws, pulled down six rebounds, was credited with nine assists and had four steals. “Moose”, who is averaging over 19 points-per-game in 56 games overall with the Redmen, registered his 200th career three-pointer and now has 203. He is now just four rebounds short of 500-plateau in his two seasons with the Redmen.

Teammates Matt Thornhill of Ile-Bizard, Que., and Michael White of Montreal, also figured prominently in scoring with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Thornhill went 5-for-10 from three-point range, while White had identical numbers from the field and pulled down nine rebounds.

High-scoring Sean Anthony, a senior from Vancouver, B.C., who was in early foul trouble, was held to just four points but contributed seven rebounds, five assists and a steal.

Cam Mowat was one of four Gaiters to hit double figures in scoring. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound centre from Kelowna, B.C., had a team-high 20 points.

McGill, which has won two of three meetings with the Gaiters, trailed only once in the game, on the opening basket by 6-foot-8 Hermon Tesfaghebriel, who was one of two Gaiters to be assessed a technical foul and finished with 13 points on the night.

McGill took the lead for good on Thornhill’s three-pointer at 1:21 of the opening period and broke the game open on a 14-3 run. They led 25-11 after the quarter, 42-28 at the half and 63-44 after three quarters.

McGill, which held a 22-16 margin in rebounding and an 11-6 edge in steals, outscored Bishop’s 27-16 in points off turnovers. The Redmen shot 48.4 per cent from the field, 46.2 from beyond the arc and 61.9 from the foul-line, compares to BU, which shot 42.9, 25.0 and 58.3, respectively.

The resulted evened both teams at 3-6 and left the rivals in a dead heat for the final playoff spot in the Quebec conference with seven games remaining. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, at McGill’s Love Competition Hall.
