Media bulletin from the MUHC: 10 a.m. update

Published: 16 September 2006

The Montreal General Hospital is still treating 11 victims of the shooting incident at Dawson College, all suffering from gunshot wounds. Of the 11, four have now been discharged. Five patients are now recovering in the patient units. The condition of the two who remain in the ICU in critical condition has slightly improved.

The MUHC, in cooperation with Dawson College, has set up the Dawson-MUHC Psychological Support Hotline for students, faculty, staff and families of students having difficulty coping in the aftermath of this week's shooting. The Dawson-MUHC hotline is 514-843-2839. Specialists can help people deal with their stress, anxiety and fear. Those who call the hotline will be referred to services at the Montreal General Hospital, the Montreal Children's Hospital, Concordia University Health Services, McGill University Student Services and the CSSS de la Montagne through the CLSC Metro. The Dawson-MUHC hotline will remain operational for as long as needed.

In addition, the Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal has psychosocial teams available to members of the general public. Montrealers not affiliated with Dawson in need of support can go to their local CLSC or call their local Info Santé or 514-934-0354.

In the coming days and months, the MUHC and the CSSS de la Montagne will be working closely with Dawson College to help meet the mental health needs of students and staff.

There will be a written update on September 17 at 12 p.m. A media scrum will only be held tomorrow in the event of a significant change in the condition of the patients.
