McGill men settle for silver at OUA squash championships

Published: 13 February 2010

WATERLOO - The McGill men's squash team finished second at the OUA championships, Saturday, hosted by the University of Waterloo at the Northfield Racquet Club.

After a 4-2 opening round victory over Queen's, the Redmen advanced to the gold medal game where they fell 6-0 to the Western Ontario Mustangs. It marked the 27th consecutive year that the omnipotent Mustangs had captured the OUA title.

Western, which had gone 18-0 during the regular season, had advanced to the tourney final after sweeping the McMaster Marauders 6-0 in their semifinal. The Marauders rebounded in the bronze medal game, tying Queen's 3-3 but winning the tie-breaker with four more match victories.

It was yet another dominant performance by the Mustangs. Western's Brian Hong from Toronto, Kimesh Chetty of Hamilton, Ryan Herden of Vancouver, B.C., Strachan Jarvis of Toronto, Yeshale Chetty of Millgrove, Ont., and Andrew Silvestri of Oakville all swept their opponents by 3-0 scores in both rounds, with the exception of Hong who battled McGill's Ben Marien, their top seed from Westmount, Que., to a 3-2 outcome (11-4, 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 11-0).

Marien, a 5-foot-11 philosophy senior, had swept his Queen's opponent in the semifinal, defeating Paul Gartenburg 13-11, 11-5 and 13-11.

In other McGill results from their winning semifinal, No.2-seeded Nick James of North Vancouver defeated Alex Ford 11-9, 6-11, 11-7 and 11-7, No.3 Adam Hodge of Brockville, Ont., lost to Amr Hamour (13-11, 9-11, 7-11, 5-11), No.4- Rumi Tejpar of Vancouver defeated Erik Zufelt (11-3, 5-11, 12-10, 11-9), No.5-David Sanders of Victoria, B.C., lost to Andrew Brennan (11-8, 11-5, 13-15, 8-11, 6-11) and No.6-Stu Clark, also from Vancouver, swept Jeremy Setterfield (11-8, 11-6, 12-10).

On the women's side, the Gaels knocked off the defending champion Mustangs 4-2 for the OUA banner. Queen's had reached the final after defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues 5-1 while Western knocked McMaster out of gold medal contention by a similar score. In a close bronze medal game, Toronto tied McMaster 3-3 in its fixture and 12-12 in individual matches, but won the tie-breaker by nine points on total score aggregate.
