McGill confers honorary degrees on Robert Wares and Julian Adams

Leaders in mining and pharmacology recognized at convocation ceremony

McGill University conferred degrees today upon 1,114 students graduating from the Faculty of Science and bestowed honorary doctorates upon Robert Wares and Julian Adams, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their respective field.

Robert Wares, Doctor of Science, honoris causa
A graduate of McGill University with a Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences,
Robert Wares’ interest in mineral exploration led him to the presidency of Osisko Mining Corporation in 1988. Mr. Wares’ leadership in this field enabled him to make the discovery of an old mining camp at Malartic, Quebec, into one of the world’s top gold finds of the last decade. Because of this discovery, the search for similar deposits in Canada and around the world was reignited.

Julian Adams, Doctor of Science, honoris causa
Julian Adams is a drug pioneer who earned a Bachelor of Science at McGill. He was instrumental in developing a drug for HIV treatment (Viramune) and more recently, Velcade, a drug for patients suffering from bone marrow cancer and relapsed mantle cell lymphoma. Dr. Adams is chief scientific officer at Infinity Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the holder of over 40 patents and has authored over 120 peer-reviewed papers.
