McGill and Tsinghua University explore new collaborations

Published: 3 December 2012

On November 16, Prof. Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University, visited Tsinghua University, a leading Chinese institution of higher learning. She met with her counterpart President Chen Jining, and they discussed how they might strengthen ties between the two universities in the coming years.

During the talks, a number of areas of mutual interest emerged. These include a shared commitment to exploring new collaborations in research related to life sciences, law, chemistry, engineering, materials, and management. The senior administrators also expressed a desire to increase summer school programs and exchanges for students and faculty.

Prof. Munroe-Blum and Dr. Chen underscored the existing, and successful, management student exchange in place between McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management and the Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, which dates back to 2008. This exchange, they noted, could serve as a model for future collaborative programs.

New partnerships between McGill and Tsinghua are clearly gaining momentum. One day prior to Prof. Munroe-Blum’s visit to Tsinghua University, a delegation led by Dr. Si Yuan, Tsinghua Vice President and Provost, met with researchers, Prof. Anthony Masi, Provost, and Dr. Rose Goldstein, Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations) as well as other senior McGill officials in Montreal.
