Materials Alumni Newsletter

Published: 9 April 2015

Dear Alumni,

Welcome to our semi-annual newsletter.  As Chairman of the department for the last 8 years, we have seen many changes.  On the Materials side, the undergraduate program has grown to 214 with an average class size of 45; we have 35 master’s degree students and 84 Ph.D. students who come from all over Quebec, Canada and the rest of the world.  We have experienced growth in our professoriate as well to 17 professors, 5 of which were hired in the last 6 years in the fields of bio-materials, electronic materials, computational materials modelling and mineral processing.

On the subject of mineral processing, we recently celebrated Prof. Jim Finch’s retirement at Thompson House, a site of many memories for him and his family; it was a great sendoff but we will miss him as a colleague and a friend.  On a sadder note, we experienced the untimely loss of one of our community members, Claudia Macedo, who was a U4 student.  The community has since rallied together to raise money for an endowed, memorial S.U.R.E. (Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering) Internship position, including a gift from the Materials Engineering Undergraduate Society (MEUS) Society of nearly $2000.

Please read below about our invitation to the Alumni/Student Mixer on May 12th and information on hiring one of our undergraduates for a Co-Op.

Best regards,
