Martlets lick defending national soccer champion Gaels

MONTREAL - Hannah Kirby, a sophomore midfielder from Kanata, Ont., scored the deciding goal in a penalty-kick shootout as the McGill women's soccer team rallied to edge defending CIS champion Queen's 2-1 at the Old Four soccer tournament on Molson Stadium, Saturday.

 

The Martlets, who won the shootout session 4-3, advanced to Sunday's final at 4:15 p.m. against Toronto, which edged Western Ontario 1-0 on a goal by all-Canadian sniper Eilish McConville.

 

Queen's struck first when Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont., fired a bullet from the box past McGill 'keeper Victoria Muccilli in the 10th minute of play. But the Martlets evened the count nine minutes later to force the shootout session when Alexandra Armstrong, a junior from London, Ont., connected in close from the right side.

 

In the penalty-kick session, Kelsey Wilson of Pincourt, Que., Stephanie Avery of Tsawassen, B.C., Selena Colarossi of Burlington, Ont., and Kirby all scored to ice the win for the Martlets.

 

The Gaels had a 20-12 edge in shots toward the net but Muccilli came up big. The sophomore from Mississauga, Ont., registered 10 saves in regulation, in addition to three saves in the shootout.

 

Chantel Marson, a fifth-year senior from London, Ont., started in nets for the Gaels. She was relieved of her duties in the second half by Rachel Burton, a freshman from Toronto, who finished the game and was saddled with the loss.
